What causes acne?

Hormones: During puberty (which can begin as early as age 9), hormones in boys and girls begin to stimulate the sebaceous glands and create more sebum (oily secretion) than normal. This causes pores to become clogged, resulting in acne. Hormones fluctuating around menstrual cycles and during pregnancy can also trigger outbreaks.

Genetics: One cause of acne that we can’t control is our genes. If your family has a history of severe acne, you’re more likely to develop it too.

Medications: Typically, medications that impact hormones – those containing prednisone, progestin, corticosteroids, testosterone or lithium – can worsen acne.

Other factors that can cause acne include diet, stress, and environmental changes.
