How does laser hair removal work?

By emitting light energy to follicular structures, laser hair removal works by injuring the hair follicle and reducing its ability to produce hair. Heating the follicles to a high enough temperature, the hair is destroyed without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Since hair follicles don’t all produce hair at the same time, multiple treatments are required to effectively treat all the growth cycles. Factors such as thickness, hair colour, hormones, laser energy, clinical standards, and technician experience may affect the number of required treatments.

Here are just some of the reasons laser hair removal is favourited by many:

  • Semi-Permanent: after about eight treatments, hair follicles stay dormant until triggered by hormones
  • Less Irritation: no post-treatment razor bumps or deep ingrown hairs
  • Precision: no more stray chin, knee, or ankle hairs

What to Expect on Your First Visit

Laser hair removal offers a near-permanent hair reduction, which makes it a superior treatment for hair removal. During the procedure, as the laser goes over your skin, it can feel hot and prickly. Treatment length depends upon the size of the area being treated, with large areas like backs and legs taking an hour or more. After the procedure, you may experience redness or swelling, which you can treat with ice.

Avoid any other hair removal treatments after receiving laser hair removal and limit sun exposure between treatments. With laser hair removal, the hair doesn’t immediately fall out. Instead, the hair is shed over the following days, with further treatments targeting hairs in the new-growth cycle.

I have been visiting Kristin for over a year for laser hair removal. The staff have always been professional, courteous and friendly, every visit. An amazing experience with awesome results!

  • Yes! As a common medical procedure, laser hair removal is safe when performed by a trained professional. Vetting the credentials of your technician is crucial to your experience and your results with laser hair removal. Since the industry is not regulated, anyone can do it and inexperience or lack of training can result in side effects like scarring and discolouration.

At External Affairs, our technicians undergo extensive training on the lasers, techniques, hygiene, and care before treating any clients. This ensures that your safety and results are top-notch!

  • For safety reasons, there are no studies done on the impact of laser hair removal on those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Therefore, we recommend waiting until you are no longer pregnant or breastfeeding to enjoy laser hair removal.

  • Because the laser is heating the follicle, it’s important not to rip the hair out between treatments so stay away from waxing, plucking, threading, or sugaring.

If you need to remove hair between sessions, shaving is the safest option because it only removes hair from the surface level and has no impact on the follicle.

  • If you’re not pregnant or breastfeeding, do not have a pacemaker, and are free from serious skin conditions like psoriasis or dermatitis - you are likely a great candidate!

If you are on medications that affect your skin and its sensitivity (such as Accutane or Retin-A), you cannot undergo laser hair removal.
