BHRT: The Basics

BHRT: The Basics

Written by Tammy O’Rourke, BS/MS, PhD, NP

Remember the days when you would finish a productive day at work and race home to eat a nutritionless, microwave dinner. You’d rush back out the door to meet friends for a late nightcap downtown. You’d drink a couple more glasses of wine than anticipated and tumble into bed late. Your alarm would go off the next morning and you’d do it all again with the stamina of an energizer bunny – and feel great! I don’t know about you, but just reading that anecdote exhausted me! How did we always feel so good despite not treating our bodies well?

Starting in our mid-30s, our hormone levels decrease and can be a driving factor for some of the typical conditions associated with aging:

● Decreased energy
● Weight gain
● Chronic fatigue
● Hair loss
● Mood swings
● Lowered sex drive
● Menopause

Sound familiar? Most people don’t know that hormone levels need to be checked if you’re experiencing these symptoms. Healthy hormone levels play a vital role in our well-being. We don’t have to age feeling like we’re missing our younger bodies with higher hormone levels, we can replace them with safe, external sources.

As the administrator of the BHRT program at our clinic, my passion is making clients feel better in their bodies using bio-identical hormones. I, myself, have been using BHRT for many of the symptoms above for the last 3 years!

Here’s some basic information you need to know if you’re curious about BHRT.

What is BHRT?
BHRT stands for bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. Bio-identical hormones are derived from plants and have been synthesized to be used similarly to our body’s own hormones. Our bodies recognize these bio-identical hormones and use them for health-related reasons!

Which Hormones Are Important
There are five common types of bioidentical hormones:
● Testosterone
● Estradiol
● Progesterone
● Thyroid

Typically, women are deficient in all of the hormones listed above – yes, even testosterone! For men, they often need more thyroid, testosterone, and DHEA.

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapyMy Doctor Said My Levels Are Fine, But I Still Don’t Feel Good
I’ve heard this so many times! Clients usually come to see me after not being happy with the investigation their family doctor has done. They’re assured that their decreased hormone levels “fall within normal limits for your age” or “are a natural part of aging” and living with their bothersome symptoms is the new normal. Not true! I have analyzed the effects of imbalances and deficiencies and studied hormones extensively with WorldLink Medical, the Academy of Preventative and Innovative Medicine. A tailored BHRT program for your body’s specific needs can optimize your health and get you back to your energetic self!

Is BHRT Safe?
The evidence shows that hormones are safe when we use the right kinds, in the right way, for the right patients. I prescribe hormones that have been clinically tested to provide desired results for my clients.

If you’re curious about your hormone levels and how they might be impacting your well-being, let’s talk! Your complimentary consultation is just a phone call away. Call our clinic at (780) 455-2754 to book your appointment.

I’ll be sharing more in-depth content about BHRT and its effects on your health, so keep an eye out for new blog posts. I can’t wait to help you feel better!
