Easy Ways to Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles

Have you noticed forehead wrinkles developing? You’re not alone! Forehead wrinkles are one of the top skincare concerns among patients 25 and up. The forehead is probably one of the most expressive areas of our faces so it’s no surprise a lot of people develop wrinkles here quicker compared to the rest of their faces. But don’t rush to your hair stylist for a bang cover up just yet… we’ve got some easy fixes to prevent or lessen the appearance of forehead wrinkles.

Common Causes

As with many skin concerns, age and genetics plays a role in the development of forehead wrinkles. But just because collagen and elastin reduces as we grow older, it doesn’t mean there aren’t other factors that come into play like:

  • Repetitive forehead facial expressions

  • Excessive sun exposure

  • Facial muscle strength

  • Vision problems - you frown more!

  • Stress

  • Gravity

  • Pollution

Different Types of Forehead Wrinkles

There are two types of forehead wrinkles: dynamic and static. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by facial movements. Think about lifting your eyebrows up, and you get those lines across your forehead. Now you bring your eyebrows back down and the lines are gone. Those are dynamic forehead wrinkles! They are fleeting wrinkles that only appear with facial expressions. Static wrinkles are those that leave their tracks while your face is at rest. These are a little trickier to treat because the muscle movement has etched the wrinkle into the dermis and is now becoming scarred. But that doesn’t mean we can’t lessen their appearance!

Here’s how we can prevent or reduce forehead wrinkles.

1 - Use Vitamin C and SPF Every Day

Yes - every day. Vitamin C boosts collagen production, fights free radical damage, protects the skin from UVA and UVB rays, helps fade the appearance of dark spots, and lends to a brighter-looking complexion. Sunscreen with at least SPF 30 helps shield against the sun’s damaging effects. Put these two together and you’ve got a powerful protection duo that will reduce the appearance of forehead wrinkles.

2- Find Products With Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is one of the most coveted ingredients on the skincare market thanks to its ability to hold 1,000 times its weight in water. This incredible ability to hydrate also minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles thanks to its plumping abilities. Our HA+ Firming Boost serum does this + more! Find it in our online store.

3 - Start Using Retinol at Night

Retinol is a necessity in any anti-aging skin routine for it’s proven ability to stimulate collagen growth. The tip: retinol works best at night to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. This is largely due to the fact that the skin repairs itself at night so applying it topical before bed helps boost the process. And you know it - we carry a couple great retinols! For a retinol first timer, try Advanced Retinol 0.5%. If you’re a more seasoned retinol user, try ZO® Skin Health Wrinkle & Texture Repair. But a little disclaimer: retinol works differently for everyone and it’s best to get an expert opinion before you start. We have complimentary skin care consultations with our experts so they can steer you towards the right product and frequency!

4 - Injectables for Immediate Results

If updating your skincare routine with anti-aging ingredients isn’t the quick fix you’re looking for, it’s time to turn your attention to injectables. When neuromodulators (like Botox® and Dysport®) are injected into a specific forehead muscle, it temporarily paralyzes them so they can’t contract. Aka - if you can’t make your forehead expressions, you won’t be able to get (or worsen!) forehead wrinkles!Botox® or Dysport® can be injected into three different muscles in the forehead to inhibit movement. There is a large, thin muscle that covers the forehead called the frontalis muscle. This muscle is what allows you to lift your eyebrows up from happy or surprised expressions. There are also muscles that wrap around part of your eyebrow called the corrugator muscles. These muscles allow you to pull the eyebrow together to make your angry, frustrated, or confused expressions. And lastly, the muscle between the brows is called the procerus that pulls the heads of your eyebrows down.

Preventative Botox® or Dysport® in the forehead before any wrinkles appear is a great way to keep a forehead smooth with retreatments every 3-6 months. If static wrinkles are already present, Botox® or Dysport® will prevent them from getting any deeper. The amount required varies from person to person and is based on the strength of the muscle pull and the size of the forehead. Typically, treating forehead wrinkles with neuromodulators can range between $100-$600 depending on the desired result. Neuromodulator treatment on dynamic forehead wrinkles.

5 - Non-Surgical Face Lift

If you've got lots of static forehead wrinkles, you may be a good candidate for Silhouette InstaLift®, also known as the non-surgical face lift. This procedure calms the muscles while holding them in place, transforming the forehead into a smooth, wrinkle-free surface. Similar to other treatments, the recovery time is short and the results are not permanent, lasting about a year and a half.
