What is acne?
Appearing on the face, chest, back, and shoulders, where your body has the most sebaceous glands, acne is the result of blocked follicles due to excessive oil and/or hormone production, bacteria, and dead skin cells.
When the follicles are clogged, they can present as several different types of acne lesions including whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts.
What causes acne?
Hormones: During puberty (which can begin as early as age 9), hormones in boys and girls begin to stimulate the sebaceous glands and create more sebum (oily secretion) than normal. The increase in sebum causes pores to become clogged, resulting in acne. Fluctuation hormones around menstrual cycles and during pregnancy can also trigger outbreaks.
Genetics: One cause of acne that we can’t control is our genes. If your family has a history of severe acne, you’re more likely to develop it too.
Medications: Typically, medications that impact hormones – those containing prednisone, progestin, corticosteroids, testosterone or lithium – can worsen acne.
Other factors that can cause acne include diet, stress, and environmental changes – particularly moving from hot and humid to dry and cold.
