How Microneedling Works
A medical procedure that’s designed to stimulate the body’s natural healing, microneedling (also known as collagen-induction therapy) involves targeted microtrauma. Using a pen-like device equipped with over 10 tiny, vibrating needles, micro-needling repeatedly punctures the first layer of skin to trigger collagen and elastin production and the generation of new skin cells.
While it sounds painful, the procedure is actually quite gentle and can even be done around the eyes, where sensitivity is high. Generally, three to five treatments are needed to achieve desired results, but the treatment plan varies per individual.

What to Expect on Your First Visit
Micro-needling involves piercing the skin repeatedly with tiny needles using a pen-like device. The needles pierce your skin about 2mm deeps to trigger your natural healing response and evoke collagen and elastin production. Before your treatment, stay out of the sun for 24 hours, avoid taking any auto-immune medications for 24 hours, and arrive with a clean face and no makeup.
A topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure, which is minimally invasive and feels akin to having sandpaper rubbed on your face. Afterwards, your skin may be red and feel tight (like a sunburn). Results are immediate and continue to improve up to four weeks post-treatment. You may need up to six treatments for best results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Still not sure? Read our FAQ’s below.
How do I care for my skin after treatment?
Don’t wash your face for at least four hours afterward and avoid wearing makeup, working out, hot showers, sun exposure, and massages for 24 hours. You may notice tiny, pinpoint scabs up to three days after the treatment – don’t pick, touch, or exfoliate these scabs, they will fall off when the skin is healed.
Does microneedling hurt?
The procedure is minimally invasive and causes minor discomfort. A topical numbing cream is used before treatment.
What are the side effects of microneedling?
When completed by a professional, microneedling has no known side effects aside from redness and minor scabbing.
Am I a candidate for microneedling?
Safe for all skin types and colours, microneedling doesn’t damage the skin and can be performed on delicate areas (eyes, neck). You should not undergo microneedling if you:
• Have used Accutane within the last three months
• Have open wounds, cuts, or abrasions
• Have had radiation skin treatment in the last year
• Suffer from skin infections or conditions
• Have herpes simplex in the area of concern
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding
