Can Dermarolling Help My Skin At Home?
Can dermarolling help my skin at home?
Now that Zoom meetings, virtual connections, and Facebook Messenger are becoming common ways to communicate, we all find ourselves staring at our reflections more than ever. Especially without makeup. Our true selves are being revealed!
So despite that we can’t get into the clinics to see our favourite skin specialist for our favourite treatment, there is help at home.
"In the clinic a treatment called microneedling has become very popular over the last few years."
A device called a MicroPen is an electric device that uses a sterile cartridge with 12 tiny needles to create micro punctures into the skin.
The treatment is typically used to improve the appearance of acne scars, uneven texture, larger pores, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles as well as pigmented skin.
The device penetrates up to 2 mm into the skin causing micro injuries which initiates a wound healing response to stimulate the production of new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid.
In the clinic, PRP ( AKA Vampire Facial) or select serums may be added to enhance the results. These treatments are usually recommended 1 month apart in a series of 3 treatments for mild concerns and up to 6 for more moderate concerns. The healing time is typically 3-5 days depending on the depth of penetration and the number of passes.
Dermarolling At Home
When trying to mimic therapeutic treatments at home, we do recommend using caution. Dermaroller devices are available through our online store.
Most dermaroller devices have needles that penetrate 0.5mm into the skin. The External Affairs Dermaroller device has 540 microneedles that penetrate 1mm into the skin.
The nature of the rolling drum requires some small amount of pressure during rolling to ensure proper microneedle penetration. This is sufficient enough to cause collagen stimulation to tighten skin and improve minor skin imperfections.
Although the dermarolling at home procedure is far less aggressive than the in-clinic microneedling procedure, it is still a fantastic way to stimulate collagen in the comfort of your own home.
Benefits of Dermarolling:
Increased collagen
Enhance product absorption
Reduce Acne Scarring
Reduce fine lines, stretch marks & pore size
How to Use a DermaRoller:
Thoroughly cleanse using Lavender Creamy Cleanser or Salicylic Face & Body Wash
Tone skin with Dual Action Toner
Begin Dermarolling. Gently roll over the entire face in any direction. Start with light pressure and increase pressure if well tolerated. Alternate directions to complete 3-5 passes over each area. Certain areas such as forehead, upper lip, and nose can feel more sensitive. Use extreme caution, light pressure and only 1-2 passes under the eye. Pinpoint bleeding is possible.
After dermarolling, apply therapeutic serum such as EA Advanced Retinol ( wrinkle and skin tone corrector), C Stem ( for brightening pigmented skin), or HA + Firming Boost ( protective hydrating serum).
Disinfect your roller after each use by soaking in 70% isopropyl alcohol or hydrogen peroxide for 5-10 minutes. Remove from solution, air dry for several hours, then replace into case. Do not share your dermaroller with anyone.
Dermarolling can be done 1-2x per week depending on tolerance.
DO NOT USE on skin that is compromised. For example, not for use on skin that has active acne lesions, eczema, psoriasis, herpes simplex, rosacea, or any undiagnosed suspicious skin lesions. Seek medical advice if you have any of these skin conditions.
Please follow these instructions. Our skin technicians at EA are available for virtual consultations if you have any questions or concerns with dermarolling. eabeautyadvice@gmail.com
