The Non-Surgical Jawline Contouring Treatment Everybody Wants!

Move over Kylie Jenner lips (please and thank you), jawlines have become one of the most requested injectable services in the last year at External Affairs. Whether it’s jawline contouring, jawline slimming, chin augmentation or jowl reduction, we most likely have a nonsurgical treatment option for you.

What Is Used For Jawline Contouring?

Western culture associates a sharp, angled jawline with beauty. This is true for both men and women. Most of us were not born with Angelina Jolie’s perfect jawline, but now, thanks to injectables, we too can have a more aesthetically pleasing jawline.

"At EA, our product of choice for jawline contouring most often is Radiesse."

Radiesse differs from hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. While it does provide volume like an HA filler, it also stimulates collagen production. Radiesse contains calcium hydroxylapitate (CaHA), which is a collagen stimulator.

As you may know, any treatment involving the stimulation of collagen can take several weeks to months to show results. For that reason, the CaHA in Radiesse is suspended in a gel carrier. The gel carrier provides instant volume and results and gives the CaHA time to produce your body’s own collagen. As the gel carrier is slowly reabsorbed over the next few months, your body is replacing that volume with its own collagen for a beautiful, natural result.

Radiesse also repels water. You may remember from previous blogs that HA fillers are humectants, and that they draw and bind water to themselves. This makes Radiesse an ideal product for the jawline as it produces a crisp, sharp result.

Jawline Slimming

Conversely, an over-pronounced or over-angled jawline can be aesthetically displeasing. In women, especially, a square shaped face is often associated with masculinity. Often, this square shape is caused by hypertrophy of the masseter muscle.

You can find your masseter by feeling the angle of your jaw and clenching your teeth together. That muscle that you feel flexing is your masseter. If the masseter is hypertrophic (has been over-exercised and gotten too big) neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport can help.

You’ve probably heard of these two neuromodulators before, but if you haven’t, I’m going to explain how they work. Botox and Dysport are both drugs that are injected into muscles in order to temporarily relax them. The effects typically last 3-4 months.

"Facial muscles are like any other muscles in your body. If you stop using them, they fade away and atrophy."

When your masseters are injected with neuromodulators and are relaxed for 3-4 months, it’s like they took a 3-4 month break from the gym. With that resultant atrophy comes facial slimming!

*Fun fact: neuromodulators can also be used in the masseters to relieve symptoms of TMJ.

Jowl Reduction Using Jawline Fillers

Pre-jowl sulcus, or that little bit of sagging or pooching in the jawline, is an obvious indicator of aging. As we get older, the fat pads throughout our face start to dissipate and separate from each other. This separation and the result of gravity create heaviness in the lower face, often along the jawline.

Depending on the severity of the jowling, different treatment options may be available.

Filler injections along the jawline (again, often Radiesse) can help to “tether” and “stretch” the jowling to make it less prominent. Filler injections may also be indicated in the cheeks to help to create lift in the lower face.

Another treatment option is injecting Belkyra directly into the fat in the jowls. Belkyra is a deoxycholic acid that is injected into fat to permanently dissolve it. That’s right, permanent results!

Combination therapy of fillers and Belkyra may be recommended for optimal results.

Chin Augmentation

Referencing back to PHI, our golden ratio of 1:1.618, chin augmentation may be indicated to optimize facial aesthetics. According to PHI, the length of the chin should be approximately 1.618 to the to the total volume of the top and bottom lip together. Furthermore, the projection of the chin should create a straight line with the top lip and bottom lip when viewed in profile. Most often, HA fillers, like Restylane, are used to achieve these proportions whether we are looking to lengthen or project the chin.

So there you have it! You’re now fully versed in the world of jawline aesthetics. If any of these treatments sound like something that you could benefit from, come see us at External Affairs for a complimentary consultation and treatment plan!

Now, hopefully if you hear the theme song from Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” your mind won’t instantly turn to images of a murderous, blood-thirsty shark on the loose, but instead to that tight, defined jawline in your near future ;)
